AirMagnet Laptop Analyzer Using Multiple Proxim USB Adapters with Spectrum XT Integration

I've recently had the ability to use multiple Proxim/Orinoco 8494-US  wireless adapters with the AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer Pro application with the AirMagnet Spectrum XT integrated into the same application interface.

When you use three Proxim/Orinoco 8494-US wireless adapters with WiFi Analyzer pro, you're able to capture data on channels 1, 6 and 11 simultaneously, as well as do roaming testing

White Spaces - new wireless space launched

Remember the death of analog TV? Those unused analog TV channels are now approved for use as wireless White Spaces. White spaces operate at lower frequencies, and are able to travel great distances just as analog TV signals did when they were in use. Supporters of white spaces say that use of these regions of  licensed spectrum offer the same benefits of WiFi spectrum with the added advantages

Wireless Field Day II

I'm very excited to inform you (if you haven't already heard) of the second Wireless Field Day that'll be taking place in San Jose on January 25th - 27th 2012. Assuming that the Mayans are wrong, we will be gathering in San Jose to hear presentation from a great group of wireless companies.

The majority of my career I've been focused on Cisco's wireless hardware line, so I'm looking forward to

Public Speaking - Embrace the Fear

I don't get the opportunity to speak in public very often, but when I do have an opportunity come my way, I try to embrace the natural fear of public speaking and make a video recording of my presentation. There have been a couple of times where I've presented and I was so nervous, I forgot to hit the record button!

Making a video of the session allows me to see what I'm doing right or wrong,

Rogue access points wired into your LAN - how afraid should you be?

I've been thinking about the fear that some enterprises have about the possibility of someone bringing an access point from home and connecting it into the LAN at work with no security enabled.

Most wireless vendors have a way to determine if rogue access points are actually connected into the wired LAN. Cisco's WCS has the ability to track a rogue access point on the LAN via RLDP, but it has

Gestalt IT - Wireless Tech Field Day #2 - a call for delegates!

If you've already put your name in to be considered as a delegate for the upcoming Wireless Tech Field Day #2, or you were a delegate at the first Wireless Tech Field Day you don't need to do anything at all.

If you're interested in becoming a delegate for the2nd Wireless Tech Field Day make sure you do put your name in the hat.

IPexpert CCIE Written Video On Demand Series - by yours truly

Recently I spent a great deal of time recording content for a CCIE Wireless Written Video On Demand series for IPexpert. I took the Cisco CCIE Wireless blueprint v1.0 and fleshed it out into a series of power-points and accompanying audio information to provide the backbone of information for passing the CCIE Wireless written exam. The total running time is just over 11 hours - and in the course

The History of Wireless Part One

The very first 802.11 wireless networking standard was ratified in 1997. These first wireless networks were very slow, and barely usable. Early 802.11 used FHSS modulation and could only achieve speeds of 1 and 2Mb. It wasn't until 1999 when 802.11b was ratified that wireless networking began to really catch on and speed up. Around the same time, 802.11a access points were available and could

Gestalt IT Tech Field Day - The First Ever Wireless #TechFieldDay

In a matter of just a few days, the first ever wireless focused Gestalt IT Tech Field Day will be kicking off in San Jose.  The event is scheduled for March 17th & 18th, and all the last minute details are being finalized!

I've been making a list of questions about why things don't work a certain way, or will this ever be possible based on the questions I've been asked at customer sties.  I'm

HP E-Series Mobility Portfolio

HP has launched a new series of access points through a combined development effort with the HP/Colubris development teams.  The new access point model numbers are the E-MSM460, E-MSM466 and the E-MSM430.

HP's goal is to bring a 'single pane of glass' management capability to the wireless and wired networks through integrating the HP Mobility Manager 3.10 into the existing IMC solution.

Aruba AirWave Videos on YouTube

I just found a bunch of cool AirWave video how-to's on YouTube thanks to @nullinterface asking a question about Aruba's manageability.

There are 12 videos in all - covering the following topics:

AirWave Integrate Seamlessly
AirWave Scale To Your Enviroment

AirWave Pass Compliance Audits
AirWave Administrator Role Based Permissions

test aaa group

Maybe everyone else knows about this command - I'd forgotten about it and had to dig it out of an email thread this morning.  I'm running through testing a bridge link setup where the root AP is the radius server for authenticating the non-root AP.

This command test aaa group allows you to do a sanity check on your root AP configuration so you don't spend all day troubleshooting the non-root AP

mls qos trust what?

I'm working through the IPexperts Lab2 for the CCIE Wireless - trying to reverse engineer the solutions to the questions and understand the subjects where I'm lacking.  Namely QoS.

I was digging around trying to find the reason why the solution for section 2.8 bullet point number two was to use the command 'mls qos trust ip-precedence' for all the connections between the core switches. The

Problem - configure connections to not pass BPDUs without disabling STP on the port.

There is a good conversation on how to reduce the STP CPU utilization due to a high number of VLANs configured on a given switch on Cisco's NetPro forum.  The following links are referenced in the post (including those links here just for good measure).

Gestalt IT Wireless Field Day March 17-18 2011 SJC

So, you may or may not have heard that there is going to be a Wireless Field Day taking place in San Jose March 17-18th through a lot of hard work by the fine folks at Gestalt IT.  Stephen & Claire along with the help of the delegates are working to make the first Wireless Field Day simply stupendous.  There hasn't been anything like this put together before - and this is a first in many regards.

Comparing 802.1x Authentication Methods

I could have sworn I'd already linked to this image.  This is the chart I frequently refer to when I get asked 'What is the best security method for us'.  This chart will help you decide how secure a WLAN can be depending on the security mechanisms currently at your disposal (read: no additional spending required).  This chart is a bit old, and doesn't list new OSes like Windows 7, but you get

Would you be interested in a Wireless Tech Field Day?

The question has been asked: Is there enough demand to support a Wireless Tech Field Day?

I know I can count at least 15 ~ 19 wireless people on Twitter that might like to participate as  delegates, and at least 27 or so companies that could participate as event sponsors..

So, I'm throwing this survey out there to find out what companies you'd be interested in meeting with and to see how many

Rigs others have rigged

The easiest way to show you the rigs that my ingenious co-workers have come up with to solve the problems associated with surveying outdoors/indoors and traveling with the necessary parts is to embed a slideshow of their efforts.  Thanks goes out to Jeff Russell (again) and Mike Rollison for sending me pictures of their creations!
